Storm Preparation Checklist UK
What to do before, during and after a storm in the UK, based on GOV.UK advice: secure your home, charge devices, and stay safe from power lines.
Named storms bring high winds, flooding and power cuts across the UK every year. Most damage and injuries come from flying debris, falling trees and downed power lines, so a few hours of preparation before a storm arrives makes a real difference.
Based on official GOV.UK Be Ready guidance.
When a storm is forecast
- Check Met Office forecasts and National Severe Weather Warnings for your area.
- Know who your electricity network operator is, and keep the 105 power cut number handy.
- Charge phones, power banks and any backup batteries for medical equipment.
- Secure or bring in anything that could blow away: ladders, trampolines, garden furniture, bins and toys.
- Close and fasten doors and windows, especially those facing the wind, and garage doors. Bolt loft hatches.
- Park cars in a garage or away from buildings, trees, walls and fences.
- Check whether schools are closing, and check on neighbours who may need help.
During the storm
- Stay indoors unless it’s essential. If you go out, don’t shelter next to buildings, walls, fences or trees.
- Don’t go outside to repair damage while the storm is still going.
- Avoid travel. If you must drive, slow down and take care on bridges and exposed roads, especially in a high-sided vehicle or when towing.
- Keep well away from fallen power lines. GOV.UK warns high-voltage electricity can jump gaps without warning.
After the storm
- Don’t touch any fallen or hanging electricity or phone cables.
- Stay clear of walls, buildings and trees that may have been weakened.
- Check on neighbours and relatives, and help them arrange repairs.
- Photograph any damage before clearing up, for your insurer.
Your storm kit
Storms often knock out power for hours or days, so your 3-day emergency kit is your storm kit: torches and batteries, a battery or wind-up radio, charged power banks, warm bedding, water and no-cook food. If you live in a flood risk area, add flood protection.
