How to Prepare for a Water Supply Outage

How much water to store, purification tablets, water butts and handwashing tips from GOV.UK’s water outage advice.

Based on official GOV.UK Be Ready guidance.

How much water to store

  • Store 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, for 3 days. That is 9 litres per person.
  • Add extra for cooking, washing, baby formula, medical devices and pets.
  • If you lack space, keep purification tablets or a way to boil water. Follow the tablet label exactly.
  • A water butt can collect rainwater for flushing toilets. Never drink it.

During an outage

  • Check your water company’s website for updates and bottled water stations.
  • Use bottled water only for drinking, handwashing and food preparation.
  • Wash hands in a large clean bowl with soap to save water.
  • Use ready-made baby formula where possible.
  • Offer to collect water for neighbours who need help.
